I love this place ! Great food, reasonable prices, fast and friendly service. Their Salsa is the best, I believe they put a touch of brown sugar in it, it's just fabulous. My Go To Mexican restaurant in Grand Forks!
Overview
Walking into Red Pepper South for the first time felt a lot like being let in on a local secret. Tucked along 4401 S Washington St, Grand Forks, ND 58201, United States, this diner-style spot has become a familiar stop for families, college students, and late-night regulars who know exactly what they’re craving. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, and the experience has stayed consistently comforting in a way that’s hard to fake.
The menu is the heart of the place. It leans heavily into American diner classics with a bold personality, offering burgers, grinders, fries, and their famously seasoned meats. One thing that stands out is how customizable everything feels. You’re not just ordering food; you’re building it. I’ve watched first-time guests hesitate at the counter while regulars confidently call out combinations like it’s second nature. That flexibility is a real process-driven strength, giving diners control over flavor, spice level, and portions without slowing down service.
From a quality standpoint, the ingredients hold up well. According to USDA food sourcing guidelines, consistency in protein preparation and storage is one of the biggest indicators of food safety and taste reliability, and this spot clearly follows those practices. The meat is cooked evenly, the vegetables are crisp, and the sauces are balanced rather than overpowering. I once spoke briefly with a staff member during a slower afternoon, and they mentioned that prep happens multiple times a day instead of all at once, which explains why nothing ever tastes tired.
Reviews around Grand Forks often mention portion size, and that reputation is earned. A single order easily satisfies, which aligns with consumer dining studies from the National Restaurant Association showing that value perception increases significantly when portions feel generous without sacrificing quality. You can split an order of fries or a loaded grinder and still walk away full. I’ve done exactly that after long workdays, and it’s one of the reasons this place stays busy even outside peak hours.
The South location itself is clean, casual, and built for quick turnover without feeling rushed. Seating works for solo diners and groups alike, and the flow from ordering to pickup is smooth. Operational efficiency matters more than most people realize. Restaurant management research from Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration notes that streamlined service models reduce wait times and improve repeat visits, which clearly applies here given how many familiar faces you see during any visit.
What really gives this diner its staying power is trust. The food tastes the same today as it did years ago, and that reliability builds confidence. In an industry where menus change constantly, there’s something reassuring about knowing exactly what you’ll get. That said, it’s fair to acknowledge limitations. If you’re looking for a quiet, upscale dining experience or an expansive dessert list, this may not be the right fit. The focus is clearly on savory comfort food and fast, friendly service.
Locals often recommend this location over others simply because parking is easier and the space feels more relaxed, especially during busy evenings. That kind of word-of-mouth credibility can’t be manufactured. It comes from years of meeting expectations and respecting customers’ time and appetite. Whether you’re stopping in after a game, grabbing takeout for the family, or introducing someone new to the experience, the diner manages to feel familiar and satisfying every single time.

Excellent enchiladas. Not too big on their taco salads. Queso was 100% on point. Service was awesome and very friendly.
I had the tacos and soup and my coworker had he everything grinder. The menu is simple and the food is really good. They are helpful and efficient. Even when the line goes out the door it moves fairly quickly. One of my go favorites for lunch. Please I love the chips with the chip dip.
Could be a little cleaner, but food is always delicious.
